BPPV, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, is a type of inner ear disorder that can cause sudden, brief episodes of dizziness or spinning. This is usually triggered by changes in head position, such as turning over in bed or looking up.
Symptoms that can present with BPPV include vertigo (feeling like you or the room is spinning), nausea, vomiting, and unsteadiness or imbalance. These symptoms can be quite bothersome and affect your daily activities.
One way to check if you have BPPV at home is by performing the Epley maneuver. This is a series of positional changes and head movements that can help move any displaced crystals in the inner ear, which may be causing the balance issues. Follow Physiotherapist Jena in the video below to try the Epley maneuver.
If you continue to experience symptoms of BPPV after attempting the Epley maneuver or if your symptoms worsen, it's important to seek help from a physiotherapist trained in vestibular rehabilitation. They are specially trained to assess and treat disorders of the inner ear and can provide you with personalized exercises and treatment to help improve your balance and reduce dizziness.
